Prior preparation prevents poor projects! This principle applies to most trades, and concrete contractors are no exception. Before working with raw concrete, contractors should at least have the following 15 tools on hand. Bracing Systems offers these basic construction tools and more!
Screeds are used to smooth and level the concrete after it has been poured. Depending on your project requirements, select properly sized screeds. Projects with large surface areas may require power screeds.
Safety is of utmost importance during your projects. Bring protective gear, such as breathing protection, hearing protection, and eye protection, for you and any team members involved in the project.
These supplies are obvious but extremely important. Raw concrete is caustic, harmful to the skin during long periods of contact, making rubber gloves and boots essential. The best boots for concrete jobs also have steel toes.
Wheelbarrows are tools of transportation on the jobsite, used to carry concrete, tools, waste, etc. They are essential for efficient work
Concrete mixers are essential for producing durable, strong concrete at the jobsite. Alternatively, you could use a ready-mix concrete.
Your power hammer may not come out until the end of your project, used for finishing tasks such as attaching ledgers to foundations. Regardless, keep your power hammers and drills on hand as most jobs will eventually require them.
The specialty tools needed will depend on your specific project. For example, bring walk-behind trowels or power screeds for projects with large surface areas. A polisher or grinder is important for jobs such as countertop fabrication
Vibrators release air pockets and remaining water from poured concrete. Once again, the best vibrator will be chosen based on the specifications of your project.
Shovels are absolutely essential for concrete jobs. These tools are utilized to fill buckets and wheelbarrows, mix concrete, level grades, etc. Always keep plenty of shovels on hand.
If water gets on your concrete through rain, drainage, or snow, a motorized water pump removes that water much faster and more efficiently than manual bailing.
Circular saws or reciprocating saws can be used to cut concrete while its settings. Always have a saw on hand before any raw concrete is poured.
Plate compactors are used at the beginning of a project if the base upon which the concrete will be poured is uneven or unstable. Essentially, your compactor will create a smooth, dense spot of ground or gravel for the concrete sheet to be poured.
Your vapor barriers or retarders stop moisture from evaporating off the concrete which weakens the surface.
