SAN ANTONIO - Jewish families around San Antonio lit the first candle on their menorah on Thursday night to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah.

This year, some families said the Jewish tradition comes with some additional reservations because of the Israel, Hamas conflict.

“Hanukkah is the perfect holiday because Hanukkah is all about sharing the light and putting our candles in the windows to show our neighbors, to show our pride in our Jewish heritage,” said Nammie Ichilov, President of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio.

Ichilov said Hanukkah is a time when families come together to rejoice. Samantha and Idan Mazuz said it’s also a great opportunity to teach their children about their family heritage.

“Educating our kids is the most important thing, to teach them where they came from, how we live, what is our tradition,” said Idan Mazuz.

Although the San Antonio Jewish community came together to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah, some families also said they do have some additional concerns this holiday season due to the Israel, Hamas conflict.

“I know that Jewish people are gathering and celebrating, in a time of this hostility it’s a bit scary. I mean, I think we’re all a bit hesitant and apprehensive,” said Samantha Mazuz.

It’s a concern that Ichilov said is valid.

“The Antidefamation League has shared some statistics that show since October 7th acts of antisemitism across the nation have risen almost 400%,” said Ichilov.

Idan Mazuz said those concerns won’t stop the Jewish community from celebrating their heritage and practicing their traditions, but extra precautions are being taken.

“We definitely are taking a lot of precautions and making sure we’re being in touch with the San Antonio Police and Sheriff department to make sure that our members are being safe,” said Idan Mazuz.

The Mazuz family and Ichilov said they feel lucky to live in San Antonio because most of the community has been respectful and supportive of the Jewish community.
