UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALDAMAR LUCIUS DICKINSON, OF MONTAGUE, MICHIGAN.
JAR-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 497,775, dated May 23, 1893.
Application filed September 17, 1892. Serial No. 446,190. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALDAMAR LUCIUS DICK- INSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montague,in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful J ar-Holder, of which the following is r a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in de-' vices for holding and lifting jars, cans, bottles, 850., While hot or during the process of filling or emptying, the objects in view being to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device, capable of adjustment to suit various sizes of said jars, cans, (to.
Further objectsandadvantagesofmyinvention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved holder, showing a jar held thereby. Fig. 2 is a plan, view of the holder. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail transverse sections to show the clamp for the attachment and adjustment of the flexible loop.
A A represent the semicircular jaws of the holder, which are pivotally connected at one end, and are provided at the opposite end with the integral handles B B.
Adjacent tothe junctions between the heads or jaws and the handles are the cross-heads C C, also formed integral and provided at their opposite ends with eyes D, theinner surfaces of said cross-heads being channeled or concaved, as shown at E. Adjustable clampingbars F, with convex inner surfaces, are arranged parallel with said cross-heads and are provided at their extremities with the up turned threaded stems G, which project through the eyes atthe extremitiesof the crossheads and are engaged upon the reverse sides of said cross-heads by the thumb-nuts H.
K represents a flexible loop of leather, webhing, rubber, or other suitable material, the extremities of which are passed between the clamping-bars and theirrespectivecross-heads and are locked firmly in place by tightening the thumb-nuts.
By means of the abovedescribed clamps the flexible loop, or the effective portion thereof which projects into the space inclosed by the semicircular jaws of the holder, may be increased or diminished in size to suit the size of the article to be engaged thereby.
I am aware of various holders designed for the above mentioned purposes, in some of which semicircular or curved jaws are employed, the same being pivotally connected and inclosing a flexible loop, and therefore I do not desire to claim these features broadly, but it will be noted, primarily, that the jaws are connected at their outer ends, namely, those ends which are remote from the handles, and further, that the clamps described herein for the attachment of the ends of the flexible loop enable the latter to be readily and quickly adjusted to the size of the jar or bottle to be engaged; and, furthermore, that the said clamping devices for the flexible loop are not necessarily detached from the body of the holder in order to enable the loop to be adjusted.
Having described my invention, what I claim is In a device of the class described, the combination of the pivotally connectedjaws provided with integral handles,a flexible loop, and adjusting clamps carried respectively by the free ends of the jaws to engage the said loop, such clamps comprising cross-heads, O, integral with the jaws, and provided with concave inner faces and terminal perforations, adjustable clamping-bars T having convex outer faces to conform to the inner faces of the cross-heads and provided with terminal threaded stems G to fit in the terminal perforations of the cross-heads, and thumb-nuts engaging said threaded stems and bearing against the outer sides of the cross-heads, the ends of the flexible loop being engaged between the opposing concave and convex surfaces of the members of the clamps, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
"ALDAMAR LUCIU S DICKINSON.
