UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER STAUB, OF FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
sTovE-PIP'E THIMBLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,778, dated May 7, i889. Application filed July 16, 1888. Serial No. 280,031. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER STAUB, of Fort Wayne, county of Allen, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Stove-Pipe Thimble, of Which the following' is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in stove-pipe thimbles, and has for its object to provide a stove pipe thimble so constructed that the heads `Will be held firmly in place and not become loose, the thimble may be readily put together and taken apart for repairs, and can be adj usted in length.
The invention consists in a stove-pipe thilnble constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which similar gures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a View in vertical section of a stove-pipe thimble constructed in accordance With this invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view with a part of one of the heads removed, and Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of one of the heads detached.
The thimble is constructed With cast-iron annular heads 1 2. The head 2 is formed with a series of apertures, 3, of suitable size and shape, a lateral supporting-flange, 4, at its periphery, a central annular flange, 5, surrounding an opening, 6, for the insertion of the end of a stove-pipe, and an annular rib, 7, having lugs 8.
Over the central annular flange, 5, projects the end of a cylinder, 9, and againstthe flange 4 and inclosing-rib 7 rests the end of a cylinder, 10, secured by rivets to the lugs 8.
The head 1 is formed With an annular strip, 11, of cast metal, having a lateral supporting-liangc, 12, a rib, 413, at right angles thereto, with horizontal lugs 14, having openings 15, vertical lugs 16, and an internal rabbeted edge, 17, With slots 18. The head 1 is further provided With a removable annular piece, 19, resting on the rabbeted edge 17, having apertures 3, a central annular flange, 20, and screw-threaded holes 21.
Over the annular rib 13 projects the end of a cylinder, 22, secured by rivets to lugs 16, and over the central annular flange, 20, the end of a cylinder, 23. The cylinders 9 and 23 and 10 and 22 telescope each other,
respectively, thereby permitting of length- Wise adjustment of the thimble, the flanges 4 resting againsta suitable support, and the apertures 3 in the heads 1 2 serving as registers for the circulation of air. The heads 1 and 2 areheld together With the rest of the thimble by means of Wires 24 or thin metallic strips, if preferred, the Wires 24 being fastened at one end to holes in the rib 7 or other suitable connections, and secured at the other end to the lugs 14 by Winding their ends about the lugs. By means of this connection the wires 24 can be readily lengthened or shortened by simply untwisting their ends from lugs 14 and retwisting them again to allow a greater or less length to the Wires. The heads 1 and 2 also Will not become loose on account of expansion and contraction by the heat, as the Wires Will only be slightly affected. The removable annular piece 19 is provided with hooks or lugs 25, which are adapted to pass through the slots 18 in rabbeted edge 17 and engage the latter by turning the annular piece 19 thereon. By means of the removable annular piece 19 access is had to the interior of thimble for repairs and also for adjustment of the Wires 24. The piece 19 is fastened in place by screws 26, passing through the threaded holes 21 therein and engaging the openings 15 in lugs 14.
It will thus be seen that With a stove-pipe thimble constructed as herein described the thimble may be readily adjusted and the heads Will be firmly held in position, and liability to rattle or become loose avoided.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a stove-pipe thimble, the combination, With the apertured head 2, provided with the cylinders 9 and 10, of the head 1, consisting of the strip 11, provided with the rib 13, having the horizontal lugs 14, and the annular piece 19, secured to the lugs 14 of the strip 11, and having the apertures 3 and flange 20, the cylinder 22, secured to the rib 13, the cylinder 23, secured to the iiange 20, and the Wires 24, secured 'to the inner face of the said heads, substantially as described.
ALEXANDER STAUB.
