WITNESSES CATHARINE MAY, OF CLEVELAND, OIIIO, ASSIGNOR TO WALTER L. JUDD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK.
eoTTLEncAPPeR.'
SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent N0. 298,872, dated May 20, 18184.
Application iiled June 30, 1883. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GATHARINE MAY, a citzen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bottle- Capper, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to bottle-cappers, or
Io devices for securing tin foils or caps upon bottles, jars, and other vessels; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved bottlecapper. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is .a transverse vertical sectional 2o view taken through one of the jaws.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the gures.
A A in the drawings designate a pair of handles pivoted together, scissors like, by
means of a screw, pin, or rivet, B,and having forwardly projecting jaws C C, which are slightly curved, their inner or adjoining sides being concave, as shown.
D D are a pair of clamps fitted upon the 3o jaws C C, and having binding -screws E, that enter recesses F in the outer sides of the said jaws, thereby preventing the said clamps from sliding out of place upon the jaws. rlhe clamps D D serve to secure in position aloop,
G, of leather, rubber, whalebone, metal, or
other suitable material, the ends of which are inserted between the said clamps and the inner sides of the jaws, and held securely by simply tightening the binding-screws E E.
The operation of. my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The cap is first placed in position over the head of the bottle, jar, or other vessel upon which it is to be secured. The capper is manipulated with the thumb and fingers of the right hand so as to bring the loop G over and around the cap. The bottle or vessel is then gently raised or pressed in an upward and outward direction, (it being held during 5c operation with the left hand,) thus causing the loop to slip under the lip or flange of the Y bottle, holding it firmly. Thebottle may now be turned or revolved in one direction, either to the right or to the left, thus causing the 4 loop G to tighten the cap smoothly and securely upon the bottle. For securing foil upon bottles or other vessels the operation is much the same. The foil, being cut to the re quired size, is gummed or pasted and ad- 6o justed upon the head of the bottle or vessel, after which I proceed as above described, using, however, less pressure, in order to avoid tearing or injuring the foil.
This device is simple, convenient, :and easily manipulated. It may be readily adjusted to bottles, jars, or other vessels of various sizes by simply lengthening or shortening the loop G.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. An improved device for capping bottles, jars, and the like, the same consisting, essentially, of a pair of handles pivoted together, scissors-like, and having forwardly-extending jaws, and a loop or flexible strap having its ends connected adjustably with the said jaws, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a pair of handles pivoted together, scissors-like, having forwardly-extendingjaws provided with binding- 8o screws and clamps for fastening a flexible strap to the aforesaid forwardly-projecting jaws, with a flexible strap having its ends connected adjustably with the said jaws by means of the said clamps, so as to form a tightening-loop, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CATHARINE MAY.
