GARMENT HANGER UNITS Filed May 28, 1956 f7? 72 07" (Zara .AVae Zqyer GARMENT HANGER UNITS Clara Mae Boyer, Chicago, Ill.
Application May 28, 1956, Serial No. 587,831
1 Claim. (Cl. 223-91) This invention relates to a garment hanger unit.
More particularly, this invention relates to a garment hanger unit which is particularly adapted to support simultaneously a plurality of garments, as, for example, a coat and skirt, or a coat and a mans trousers.
In another aspect, the invention relates to an attachment unit for a coat or garment hanger unit and which is adapted to be readily attached thereto in such a manner as to support an additional garment, such as a womans skirt or a mans trousers, from a coat hanger unit, in addition to the coat or like garment therefrom.
An object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved garment hanger unit which is so constructed and arranged that it may be utilized to support simultaneously a coat, or like garment, and an additional garment in the form of a skirt or trousers suspended therefrom.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved garment hanger attachment unit for a coat or like garment hanger unit and which is adapted to be attached to a coat hanger unit for the purpose of suspending an additional garment, such as a womans skirt or a mans trousers, therefrom and which is so con structed and arranged that it may be readily attached to and detached from a coat hanger unit, or the like.
Other and further objects of the present invention will be apparent from the following description and claim and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing which, by way of illustration, shows a preferred embodiment of the present invention and the principles thereof and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying those principles. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same or equivalent principles may be used, and structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the art, without departing from the present invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view illustrating a preferred embodiment of the new garment hanger unit;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the novel garment hanger attachment unit embodied in the new garment hanger unit for suspending a second or additional garment, such as a womans skirt or a mans trousers, from a coat hanger on which a coat or like garment is suspended; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3-3 in Fig. 2, illustrating the construction of one of the springurged clamping members or clips embodied in the new garment hanger unit.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing, wherein it is generally indicated at 10, and comprises a garment hanger unit which includes a coat hanger unit 11 which is shown as embodying a wooden supporting cross bar 12 having a supporting element in the form of a hook 13 attached thereto at the center thereof.
The new garment hanger unit includes a novel garment hanger attachment unit 14 which includes a flexible element in the form of a chain 15 embodying a plurality of interconnected links 16, which may be of any suitable design and shape. Each end link 16:: in the chain 15 has a spring-urged clamping clip 17 attached hired States Patent 0 ice thereto in any suitable manner, as by inserting each of the endmost links 16c through a hole or aperture 18 formed in one handle grip portion or arm 19 of each of the clamping clips 17.
Each of the clamping clips 17 is preferably made of a plastic resinous material and includes complementary handle grip members or arms 19 which are pivotally interconnected at the centers thereof, as at 20. Each of the clamping clips 17 includes a pair of clamping jaws 22 which are formed integrally with the handle grip members 19 and these clamping jaws 22 are yieldably urged together by a U-shaped spring member 21 which extends about the pivot 20 and embraces the clamping jaws 22 so as to urge them into clamping engagement with each other, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the use of the new garment hanger unit, the novel garment hanger attachment unit 14 may be suspended from the coat hanger unit 11 by inserting a central link 16 of the chain 15 over the book 13 so that the said central link comes to rest at the bottom of the hook 13 and at the top of the cross bar 12.
The clamping clips 17 may then be manipulated by their handle grip members 19 so as to spread the clamping jaws 22 apart, against the action of the spring 21, whereupon the upper edge portion 23 of a garment, such as 24, which may be a womans skirt or a mans trousers, or other garment, may be inserted between the clamping jaws 22 of each of the clamping clips 17, and thus suspended by the new garment hanger attachment unit 14 from the coat hanger unit 11.
When it is desired to remove the new garment hanger attachment unit 14 from the coat hanger unit 11 this may readily be accomplished by removing the spring urged clamping clips 17 from the upper portion 23 of the garment 24 and sliding the central link of the chain 15 olf the hook 13.
It will thus 'be seen from the foregoing description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, that the present invention provides a new and improved garment hanger unit having the desirable advantages and characteristics, and accomplishing its intended objects, including those hereinbefore pointed out and others which are inherent in the invention.
I claim:
Garment hanger apparatus comprising a rigid cross bar member adapted to support a coat or like garment and having an upper surface and opposite side surfaces, a hook-shaped supporting member attached to the center portion of said upper surface and extending substantially normally thereto, a flexible chain comprising a plurality of interconnected individual links, a pair of clamping clips each of which includes a pair of arms pivotally connected to one another, at least one of the arms of each clamping clip having a hole formed therethrough, each of the end links at opposite ends of said chain extending through the hole formed in the arm of one of said clips thereby supporting said clips at opposite ends of said chain, a central link of said chain being disposed in surrounding relationship to the lower portion of said supporting member and being freely slidable with respect thereto, the central portion of said chain bearing against said cross member when in operative position.
