3 Claims. (Cl. 24-252) This invention relates to garment supporting clips. More specifically, the invention concerns spring clips adapted to be swingably and removably mounted on the cross wire of a Wire type garment support or other wire support.

An object of this invention is to provide an improved garment supporting clip construction which includes a minimum number of components, which is of a structure lending itself to rapid assembly of the components and requiring a minimum amount of machine operations in the assembly thereof.

A further object of this invention is to provide a garment supporting clip including a pair of jaw members and a spring associated with the jaw members, the jaw members being formed for interpivoting relation, yet permitting separation of said members, the spring being adapted to maintain the, members in interpivoted relation and further, being adapted to allow engagement and disengagement of the clip in respect to a pivotal support.

Another object of this invention is to provide a clip of the character described, wherein the jaw members and spring are assembled in abutting relation, the jaw members and spring being associated in a manner to prevent accidental disassembly while the clip is being engaged or disengaged relative to a wire support, or upon subjecting the clip to impact, as when the clip is dropped on the floor.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a garment supporting clip which is economical to manufacture, which lends itself to simplified packing practices and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of use thereof.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a garment supporting clip embodying the invention, shown mounted on a pivot member;

Fig. 4 is a top plan view thereof; and

Fig. 5 is a side elevational view showing the clip members pressed into positions allowing the hooks thereof to be spaced to receive the pivot member.

The device of the instant invention consists essentially of a pair of similar, generally flat metal members having jaw portions at one end thereof, finger engaging portions at the other end thereof and intermediate portions formed with hooks adapted to be interengaged to pivotally connect the members, together with a spring member disposed with portions thereof abutting opposed portions of the pair of members, the spring member being operative to bias the jaw portions of the members toward each other; to maintain the interengaged hooks of the members in pivoted relation; and to allow relative displacement of the hooks to disengaged positions leaving a recess therebetween for receiving a combination support and pivot member and to bias the displaced hooks into engagement with the support and pivot member.

2,782,482 Patented Feb. 26, 1957 Referring in detail to the drawing, and particularly to Fig. 2, 10 designates a garment supporting clip embodying the invention. The same comprises a pair of members 11, 12 which may be formed as metal stampings, and a U-shaped metal spring member 13 opera tively associated with members 11, 12.

Each of the members 11, 12 is flat and of generally rectangular shape terminating at the lower end in a jaw portion 1-1 including an inwardly pressed clamping bead 15. A peripheral flange 16 extends at right angles to the. edges of body portion 17 of said members, said flange extending along the sides and top of the members and having opposed pinched portions 18 of semi-circular shape, providing finger engaging portions 19 at the upper ends of said members. The flange 16 forms means for stiifening the members 11, 12 and strengthening the same, as well as retaining spring member 13 against accidental relative movement, as will be later described in detail.

On each of the members 11, 12, opposed side portions of flange 16 include forwardly projecting ears 20 which terminate in upwardly and rearwardly inclined hooks 21 and providing upwardly opening recesses 22 which are inclined toward flanges 16.

With the members 11, 12 arranged in opposed relation so that cars 26 on one member are disposed outside of and adjacent to corresponding ears 20 of the other member, the hooks on said ears are twisted slightly out of the plane of the ears to allow the respective pairs of hooks to be interengaged. Thus, as shown in Fig. 4, hooks 21a on member 11 are twisted inwardly toward each other, while hooks 21b on member 12 are twisted outwardly away from each other.

The spring member 13 comprises arms 23 with notched edges as at 24, which are disposed in abutting relation to the inner surfaces of the members 11, 12, the pinched portions 18 of said members being received in notches 24. The bight portion 25 of spring member 13 is located below the base of hooks 21. Thus, spring member 13 is adapted to bias the jaw portions 14 of members 11, 12 toward each other; and also maintains the interengaged hooks 21a, 21b in interpivoted relation.

Furthermore, spring member 13 permits the members 11, 12 to be pressed toward each other to separate jaw portions 14 from each other to allow a garment, or the like, not shown, to be engaged by said jaw portions. Also, with the intermediate portions of members 11, 12 pressed toward each other, the hooks 21a, 21b will move away from each other to a disengaged position indicated in Fig. 5. While in such disengaged position, the recesses 22 will be exposed and adapted to receive a transverse pivot member indicated at 26 which may be the cross Wire of a wire type hanger or the like. On releasing the compressed members 11, 12, spring member 13 will be operative to cause hooks 21a, 21b to move toward each other to grip pivot member 26.

The arms 23 of spring member are of a width somewhat less than the transverse distance between opposed portions of flange 16 on members 11, 12 and the upper corners of said spring arms may be clipped as at 27.

it will be apparent that the members 11, 12 and spring member 13 may be easily assembled to form clip 10, the spring member having only abutting relation to members 11, 12 but secure against accidental dislodgment, even if the clip is subjected to impact.

The clips 1i may be packaged by arranging a plurality of the clips in side by side relation with a common wire support engaged by the hooks of the respective clips, such assembly, in turn being mounted on a card.

it will thus be seen that there has been provided an improved clip construction which is easily and quickly attached or detached relative to a pivot member such as ice the cross wire of a wire type garment hanger; which is economical to manufacture and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of use.

Since changes may be made in the embodiment of the invention herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention, it is understood that all matter herein disclosed shall be deemed illustrative and not by way of limitation.

Having thus described our invention, we claims as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent:

1. A clip comprising a pair of opposed members including jaw portions at one end thereof and finger gripping portions at the other end thereof, each of said members further including a pair of spaced parallel ears, the ears on one member extending toward the ears on the other member, each of said ears being formed with a hook having an opening extending toward the finger gripping portion, the hooks on at least one of said members being laterally displaced from the plane of the ear to permit interengagement with the adjacent hook on the other member, spring means between opposed surface portions of said members for biasing the jaw portions thereof toward each other and maintaining the interengaged relation of said hooks yet permitting movement of the intermediate portions of said members toward each other to move the interengaged hooks out of engagement and to provide a space therebetween.

2. A clip comprising a pair of flat opposed members including a jaw portion at one end thereof and finger gripping portion at the other end thereof, laterally extending ears on opposite intermediate edge portions of said members, said ears being formed with a hook providing a recess opening toward the finger gripping portion, said hooks being displaced from the plane of said ears to allow the interengagement of the hooks on one member with the respectively adjacent hooks on the other member, a U-shaped spring member located with the arms thereof in abutting relation to the inner surfaces of the finger gripping portions of said members and the bight portion thereof being located between the base of said ears and said jaw portion for maintaining the respective pairs of interengaged ears in engaged relation while allowing said engaged ears to be disengaged upon movement of said members toward each other to expose said upwardly opening recesses.

3. A garment supporting clip for removable mounting on a wire member, said clip comprising a pair of opposed members each including a clamping jaw atone end, a finger grip at the other end and flanges at the opposite sides thereof, laterally extending pivot ears on intermediate portions of said flanges, said ears being formed with hooks providing a recess opening toward said finger grip, the tips of said hooks extending upwardly toward said flanges, said hooks being laterally displaced from the plane of said ears to allow interengagement of the hooks on one member with the respectively adjacent hooks on the other member, a spring member between and abutting opposed portions of said members for maintaining the respective pairs of interengaged ears in engaged relation, said interengaged ears being disengageable and movable to positions wherein the recesses of each pair of hooks are in substantial coincidence and the tips of said hooks are spaced to pass said wire member into said recesses for pivotal engagement by said hooks, said spring member being operative to maintain said hooks in pivotal engagement with said wire member and to bias the jaws of said members toward each other.
