GARMENT HANGER Filed Feb. 13 1951 INVENTOR William F. Hal W117 ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 11, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT HANGER William F. Helwig, Milwaukee, Wis. Application February 13, 1951, Serial No. 210,739
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to the ofiicial class of garment hangers and this application is a continuation-in-part of application Serial No. 49,470, filed September 16, 1948, which resulted in U. S. Patent No. 2,543,108, dated February 27, 1951.
One of the objects of this invention resides in the provision of a trouser hanger adapted to tightly grip the cuff or ends of a pair of trousers by jaws formed on crossed arms pivoted together at their upper ends and forced in opposite directions by a wire spring to close the jaws thereon.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a trouser hanger formed of cross arms pivotally connected together at their upper ends and provided with trouser gripping jaws adapted to be drawn together by a retractile coil spring.
A still further object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the crossed arms and trouser gripping jaws.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim and, although this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention the right is reserved to resort to such departures therefrom as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the trouser hanger.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side view of a modified form of the trouser hanger.
In the present embodiment of this invention, the letter A designates a trouser hanger formed of metal or other suitable material and consists of elongated handles 6 preferably of channel configuration in cross section which merge at their lower ends into flat cross members I provided with substantially vertical arms 8 supporting laterally extending trouser gripping jaws 9 having longitudinally extending depressions H] in their opposed inner surfaces. Said jaws are provided with pads l l formed of felt or other suitable material of a shape similar to that of the inner surface of the same.
The upper ends of the handles are pivotally connected by a suitable link l2 extending therethrough and also retaining a wire spring [3 within the handles with their free ends extending downwardly toward the angular fiat cross members 1 thereof. Said cross members are strengthened by ribs I4 or the like projectin from their outer surfaces.
Connected to the upper or looped end of the link is the shank l5 of a hook l6 by which the trouser is suspended from a rod or other suitable support.
In that form of the trouser hanger shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, a retractile coil spring S is substituted for the aforesaid wire spring and is disposed below the aforesaid crossed members with its opposite end connected to lugs L stamped above the jaws to draw them toward one another and thereby tightly grip the cuffs of trousers placed therebetween. Said jaws may be constructed to either grip the full length of the trouser cuffs or suspend them as set forth in my companion application filed February 13, 1951, Serial No. 210,740.
Through the instrumentality of the aforesaid structures, trouser cuffs disposed between the jaws are easily released by pressing the handles thereof toward one another and, upon being released by the hands, the jaws will readily move in clamping position.
With this invention fully set forth, it is apparent a trouser hanger is provided which is cheap of manufacture and easily opened and closed by one hand of an individual.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A trouser hanger comprising opposed channelshaped handles having their lower portions reduced in thickness and crossed, a link pivotally connecting the handles at their upper ends, an inverted V-shaped resilient wire having its looped portion overlying the lower inner portion of said link with its arms bearing against the inner surface of the channel shaped handles and ends terminating adjacent the reduced lower portions thereof, a hook pivotally connected to the link, laterally extending jaws carried by the reduced lower ends of the handles in opposed relation to one another, reinforcing ribs formed on the jaws, and ribs formed on the outer surfaces of the crossed portions of the handles and extending throughout their contacting areas.
WILLIAM F. HELWIG.
