This invention relates to garment hangers of the foldin type wherein the folded or collapsed hanger is adapted to be carried in a pocket, handbag, or purse, and in particular a hanger formed with a fiat bar having a supporting hook pivotally mounted thereon and positioned intermediate of the ends, and spring actuated clips pivotally mounted on the ends of the bar that may be extended downwardly to hold garments and the like.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a relatively simple collapsible garment hanger, adapted to support a variety of garments, and that may be carried in a relatively small handbag or the like.

Various types of folding garment hangers have been provided which have telescoping sections and fastening devices of different types but these are too heavy or too cumbersome to be carried in a purse, or are only adapted to hold a particular type of garment or the like. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a garment hanger formed with a rigid bar having a pivotally attached hook and also pivotally attached garment holding clips, all of which may be folded within the length of the bar.

The object of this invention is, therefore, to I provide means for pivotally mounting garment holding spring actuated clips and a hook on a bar to form a garment hanger wherein the parts may readily be folded to fit in a purse or the like, and readily set up for use.

Another object of the invention is to provide a garment hanger of the collapsible type wherein garments are positively gripped in holding elements thereof so that the hanger may be used in motor vehicles, railway coaches and the like without danger of the garments droppin off.

A further object of the invention is to provide a relatively small collapsible garment hanger which is of a simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the new and novel combination, construction, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described, set forth in the claim appended hereto, and disclosed in the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view showing a front elevation of the garment hanger with the parts in the extended positions.

Figure 2 is a similar view showing the parts folded.

Figure 3 is a plan view also showing the parts in the folded positions.

Figure 4 is a cross section through the hanger taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3, showing the pivotal mounting of the supporting hook on the bar.

Referrin now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the collapsible garment hanger of this invention 2 includes a bar I0 having a hook I I, and garment holding clips I2 and I3.

The parts may be made of plastic or other suitable material, and as illustrated in the drawing, the bar I0 is fiat and preferably formed with square ends I4 and I5 to which arms I6 and II of the clips I2 and I3, respectively, are pivotally attached by rivets I8 and Ill. The clips are provided with relatively short outer arms 26 and 2 I, and the garment holding jaws 22 and 23 of the clip [2, and 24 and 25, of the clip I3, are resiliently urged together in gripping relation with a garment or the like, by springs 25 and 27, respectigely. I

The hook I I is provided with an eye 28 through which it is pivotally mounted on the bar If! by a tubular rivet formed with an inner tubular member 29, and an outer tubular member 3a, as shown in Figure 4, and the ends of the tubular rivets are reamed over as shown. The hook is attached to the bar at a point midway of the length thereof so that a garment held by the clips will be balanced about the hook.

It will be understood that a hook of any other type or design may be used, and also although the clips are illustrated in the form of the usual spring actuated clothes pins it will be understood that clips of any other suitable type or design may be used.

It will also be understood that other modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

In a garment hanger, an elongated rectangular fiat bar, a pair of clips arranged on opposite ends of said bar and each having an inner arm pivotally connected to said bar, said clip-s each further including an outer arm of shorter length than said inner arm, said arms defining jaws for gripping a garment therebetween, a spring member for urging said jaws toward each other, a hook provided with an eye, a tubular rivet having reamed-over ends projecting through said eye and through said bar, said rivet including an inner tubular member and an outer tubular member, said hook being attached to said bar intermediate the ends thereof by said rivet, said rivet maintaining said hook in frictional engagement with said bar.
