Description

Sept. 7, 1948. W s, MAR-11N 2,448,611
MAGNET IC BOOKMARK Filed May 14, 1947 INV EN TOR.
Patented Sept. 7, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims. l
My present invention relates to an improved magnetic book-mark and especially to a mark having magnetic means secured thereon for placement on opposite sides of the page to be marked, the magnet elements being attracted to each other whereby the mark will be detachably secured to the page.
When attached the mark of my invention Will not slip or become removed from the page until the magnetic attraction is broken by separating the magnets.
While I have illustrated the device as embodied in a book mark it will be apparent that the principles thereof may Well be applied to index tabs and other types of page indicato-rs.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised, but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure Within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a. .perspective view of a. book showing three book marks in position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the mark of my invention in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the mark open.
Fig. 4 is a plan View of the partially assembled mark showing the magnets.
Fig. 5 is a side elevational View thereof.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view enlarged to show the details of construction.
Fig. 7 is a side elevational view of the mark partially open for insertion in a book.
Referring now to the drawings wherein I have illustrated the present preferred embodiment of my invention, I have illustrated a book 2 having pages 4.
The mark comprises a long sheet of suitable material 6 as cloth or paper to which is added paste or cement 8 at the ends of the material.
Magnets Il) are placed on the adhesive and the ends I 2 are folded over along the lines I4. The strip is folded centrally at i6 and may be used in that manner if desired.
To strengthen the mark there may be employed a second shorter strip t8 secured to the main strip at 2) and folded at 22 near the point of attachment and also centrally at 24. This strip will limit the opening of the main strip.
To use the book mark, the ends of the mark having the magnets secured therein are separated and placed on o-pposite sides of the page to be marked. The magnets will be mutually attracted through the page and Will therefore remain in position until removed.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A book .mark comprising a strip of flexible material, and magnets secured near the ends of the strip to be mutually attracted when placed in alignment on opposite sides of the page to be marked.
2. A book mark comprising a strip of flexible material, and magnets secured under the folded ends of the strip to be mutually attracted when placed in alignment on opposite sides of the page to be marked.
3. A book mark comprising a centrally folded strip of exiblle material, and magnets secured near the ends of the strip to be mutually attracted when placed in alignment on opposite sides of the page to be marked.
4. A book mark comprising a strip of ilexible material, and magnets secured under the folded ends and a strengthening strip secured to the first strip near `the edges of the folded ends of the strip to be mutually attracted when placed in alignment on opposite sides of the page to be marked.
WILLIAM STANLEY MARTIN.
