COLLAR HOLDER Filed May 23, 1955 /6 2/ /2 A? M2 2 M A TTORNEYS,
Patented Apr. 14, 1936 PATENT OFFICE COLLAR HOLDER Lawrence E. Baer, Attleboro, Mass, assignor to The Baer & Wilde Company, a corporation of Massachusetts Application May 23, 1935, Serial No. 22,928
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a collar holder, and has for one of its objects the provision of a construction in which the portion which engages one side of the collar flap may be freely swiveled relative to the portion which engages the other side of the collar flap and yet the movement of the parts will be restricted within certain desired limits.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a pair of gripping jaws which are linked together with the links confined within a certain definite position approximating that at which they will be located when the collar holder is in working position on the collar.
Another object of the invention is the bending of a single piece of wire which is used to form the jaws of the collar holder with a portion of the wire extending between the arms of the jaws at a point spaced from the bite or U-shaped bend connecting the jaws so as to form a limit or stop for the links which connect the jaws together, thus providing a stop from the same integral piece of wire stock which is utilized in the formation of the jaws.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the collar holder;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the holder;
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the collar holder;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View illustrating the portions of the holder as disposed in one position and showing the stop as functioning with relation to the link connection between the members.
In the use of a collar holder, it is sometimes desirable to have the jaws which engage one flap of the collar flexible with relation to the jaws which engage the other flap of the collar so that the same may more conveniently shape itself about the tie, and in order that this construction may be had, oppositely directed jaws are connected together by a link construction, and I have found that at times the links will slide along one of the arms of the jaws so as to dispose this jaw at a position which is inconvenient for use, and in order that this may be avoided, and without the addition of any separate articulate parts, I have so bent the wire that goes to form the jaw that the end portion thereof will extend across from one arm to the other so as to confine the links which connect the jaws together and prevent them from sliding loosely or haphazardly along the jaws to some position which is not desired; and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished.
With reference to the drawing, the collar clip consists of gripping members III and II each of which is of the same construction. These members are flexibly connected together by three chain links I2, I3 and I4, the end links I2 and I4 being connected in the bite or U-shaped bent portion of the gripping members I0 and II.
Each of these members I0 and II is formed from a single piece of wire which starting at one end I5 will be seen to be disposed in a coil of about a turn and three-quarters designated I6, and to then extend in a straight arm I! for a short distance, whereupon it is bent as at I8 into a U-shape and then extends in another straight portion I9 to a point'beneath the coil I6 and in contact therewith. The wire is then doubled upon itself by a bend as at 20 and carried along in contiguous relation to the portion I9 as at ZI providing the other arm or jaw portion. 25 The wire is then bent providing a finger 22 which extends from the arm I9, 2| to the other arm IT at a point which will provide a suflicient space 23 from the bend for the loose connection of the link I2 or I4 to this U-shaped bend I8.
The finger 22 contacts with or extends sufficiently close to the arm portion II so that the wire of the link I4 cannot pass between the end of the finger 22 and the arm ll; thus, although I allow freedom of movement of the jaw members by reason of the link connection, these links are limited in the movement which they may have along either of the arms of the jaw member which is of great advantage in use and yet I have 40 not added any separate parts to provide the desired stop at a point which is most advantageous.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a collar clasp, a pair of jaws having separable end portions opening in one direction and connected at their other ends, a link engaging said connected ends and rockable freely therein, a finger extending from one jaw to the 55 other jaw adjacent the connected ends of the jaws to limit the movement of said link.
2. A collar clasp comprising two gripping members each bent from a single piece of wire providing. a U-shaped bend at their inner portions with divergent arms terminating in an entrance mouth, a portion of said wire returning from the entrance mouth along one of the arms with its end portion bridging the space between said arms at a point spaced from said U bend, and a series of links connected together with the end links of the series engaging said U bends and confined by said bridging portions to the locality of said U bends.
3. A collar clasp comprising twogripping members each bent from a single piece of wire providing a U-shaped bend at their inner portions with divergent arms terminating in an entrance mouth, an end portion of said wire bridging the space between said arms at a point spaced from said U bend, and link means engaging said U bends and confined by said bridging portions be- 10 tween them and said U bends.
