Description

I. D. WAGNER GARMENT FASTENEH Filed June 2. 1923 11m :0. WAGNER, or s'r. Louis, ivirssonnr.
GARMENT FASTENER.
Application filed June 2,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA D. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have inyented certain new and useful Improvements ina Garment Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment fasteners, and has for its prime object to provide a novel constructed fastener adapted to be employed for use at any place on a garment which requires the use of a fastener similar to the old form of hook and eye.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastener which will securely hold the edges of a garment in a closed position and so constructed as to eliminate any possibility of the garment becoming accidentally unfastened.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a garment fastener of the above indicated character, which comprises two separate members adapted to be fastened to opposite edges of a garment and which are adapted to be brought into engagement with each other and securely locked therewith until such time as the garment is to be removed.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a garment fastener of the above indicated character, whereby one member of the fastener is provided with means for guiding and receiving the opposite member of the fastener and whereby one member of the fastener is provided with a thumb grip so that the said fastening members can be readily disengaged.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment fastener, which is simple in construction, durable, efficient for the purpose intended, and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market for sale at a relatively low'cost.
These and like objects of the invention will be better understood as the description follows and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a garment equipped with a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of my improved garment fastener.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through my improved garment fastener.
Serial No. 642,962.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the fastening members, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the cooperating fastening member.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in detail, like characters will be used to designate like parts in the different views.
In the drawing, the numeral l-indicates a garment and 2 the opposing edges of same, which are adapted to be closed by means of my improved garment fastener.
My improved fastener comprises two separate members, which are indicated by the numerals 3 and 4 respectively. The member 3 which is approximately U-shaped is constructed from a single piece of spring metal and is adapted to be secured by stitching or any other desirable fastening means to the fold along the edge of the garment 2 as at 5. The upper portion of the. member 3 which is indicated by the numeral 6 is provided with an elongated aperture 7, the purpose of which will be better understood as the description follows, while the free edge of the portion 6 has the end of same flared upwardly as at 8.
The member 4 is a flat plate having one end adapted to be secured to the fold of the garment as at 9, in a manner similar to the fastening of the member 3 at 5. A tongue 10 is struck out of the plate 4 for approximately onehalf of its length and provided with a hump intermediate the ends of same as at 11, the purpose of which will be better understood as the description follows.
When the members 3 and 4 are secured to the edge of the garment and same is ready to be fastened, the plate 4 carrying the tongue 10 is placed between the U-shaped member 3, the upwardly flared end 8 acting as a guide for the plate 4. When the plate 4 has extended within the U-shaped member a sufficient distance the hump 11 of the tongue 10 enters the aperture 7, thus firmly locking the two members together. When it is desired to unfasten the garment, pressure is exerted against the underside of the flared end 8, which permits the upper portion 6 of the U-shaped member to be raised a sufficient distance to allow the plate 4 along with the hump 11 to be withdrawn.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my garment fastener, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to, without departing from the and therefore, I
spirit and scope of the invention as claimed,
do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to the combination and arrangement of parts.
What I claim as new and by Letters Patent is:
1. In a garment fastener, rable members,
desire to secure a pair of sepaone of said members approximately U-shaped and having an aperture formed in one leg of the same, the
second member comprising a plate having the second member comprising a plate having a tongue struck therefrom and provided with a hump intermediate its ends, said plate and tongue adapted to be slidable between said U-shaped member, said hump of said tongue adapted to be received in said aperture of the U-shaped member for locking said members together, and one end of said U-shaped member formed with a thumb grip whereby the members may be readily disengaged.
3. A garment fastener of the class described comprising two separable members, one of said members consisting of a single piece of resilient metal bent to provide a U and having an aperture formed therein, the second member consisting of a. Hat plate having one end adapted to be secured to the fold of a garment, said plate having a tongue struck therefrom for approximately one-half of its length and provided with a hump intermediate the ends thereof for engaging the aperture formed in the first mentioned plate for locking the members together.
In testimony whereof, I have afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
