UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLIAM TUNSTILL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,659, dated July 8, 1873; application filed May 9, 1873.
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TUNsTILL, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented Improvement in-Olamps for Clothes, 850., of which the following is a specification:
Clamps have been made for holding clothes upon lines, and for various other uses, in which a helical spring acts to press the jaws together.
My invention relates to this class of clamps, and it is made for the purpose of simplifying the construction and lessening the expense of such clamps.
I make use of two jaws recessed to receive a spring-coil with two arms that act to close the jaws, in combination with a staple passing through such jaws and forming the fulcrum for them to move upon, and also securing such coil in place.
In the drawing, Fig.1 is a side view of said clamp partially in section, and Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the same.
The clamps a and b are made with the handle portions 2 2 and jaws 3 3, and these are united by the staple or wire 0 that forms the fulcrum upon which the parts turn in opening or closing the jaws. The coil of wire 0 has the two projecting ends or arms 4 4 that act to press apart the handles 2 and force the jaws 3 toward each other, and this coil is received within the recesses that are formed for it in the contiguous portions a and b of the clamps, and the staple or wire 0 passing through the coil 6 secures the same in place.
This construction of clamp is cheap and very efficient, and there is nothing that is liable to become bent or broken by ordinary usage.
I claim as my invention- The clamp formed of the parts a and b, united by the wire 0, in combination with the coil e having arms 4 4 that act as springs, which coil is in recesses within the clamp a b, and secured by the wire a passing through the same, as set forth.
Signed by me this 6th day of May, A. D. 1873.
WILLIAM TUNSTILL.
