AARON DEWINSKY, OF BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA.
' CLOTHES-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
Application filed June 15, 1914. Serial No. 845,204.
To all whom it may concern Be it lmown that I, AARON DEWINSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bethlehem, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ClothesPins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in clothes pins and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character including relatively movable jaws; and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby such relatively movable jaws are operatively con nected in a convenient and effective manner and whereby requisite tension is imposed upon such jaws to aflord the necessary clamping action when the device is applied in operative position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved clothes pin whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a clothes pin constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevational view taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1, certain of the parts of my invention being indicated by dotted lines; and F ig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the main jaw of my improved device having a transverse lug 2 produced at substantially its longitudinal center and through which is directed a strand a of the pivotal or connecting member 3, such pivotal member or connection being formed of a single piece of material, and
preferably of wire of the proper gage, such member being bent upon itself, to permit a second strand 1) to be directed through a lug 5 disposed transversely of the second aw 6 and positioned substantially intermediate its length and adapted to overlie the lug 2. The free extremity of the strand Z2 pro ects beyond one side of the lug 2 and is formed into a hook member 7 through which is adapted to be directed an extended portlon c of the pivotal or connecting member 3, which projected member 0 is directed rearwardly of the lugs 2 and 5 and has its extremity formed into a hook member 8 adapted to engage the bent or flexed portion 1 of the pivotal or connecting member 3.
The portion 0 of the pivotal or connecting member 3 is also directed through the convolutions of the coil spring 9 interposed be tween the jaws l and 6 and having its opposite extremities extended, as indicated at 10, and exerting such tension thereon as to cause the forward ends of such jaws to be maintained normally in contact one with the other.
As herein disclosed, the inner faces of the forward extremities of the jaws 1 and 6 are provided with the inwardly disposed blocks or extensions 11 adapted to afford flattened gripping faces.
In order to reduce to a minimum the possibility of accidental separation of the jaws 1 and 6,1 find it of advantage to provide the rear end jaw l with the upstanding block 12 of a length suflicient to intersect the adjacent end of the jaw 6 when in its normal position, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings.
The manner in which my improved clothes pin may be employed is believed to be selfevident and for this reason a detail thereof is purposely omitted.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a clothes pin constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the effectiveness with which it performs its functions, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim: I I V A device of thecharacter described Com- I prising tWo relatively movable members, each of such members being provided With a transverse lug adapted to be disposed in" superimposed relation, a pivot member for such jaws formed from a single piece of material and bent to provide substantially parallel strands, each of Whichbeingdirected through a lug of ajaw, the free extremity of one of such strands being formed into a hook througlhiwhich the second strand is directed-said second strand having its extremity formed .into a hook 'to engage the connecting portion of the strands, and a coil spring interposed between the members and havingits opposite extremities extended and engagement with such Imembers to second strand of the pivot'member being disposed through the convolutions of the coil.
