Ubisoft is selling a limited-edition special collector's edition of Assassin's Creed: Origins for $799.99. I thought it was a typo when I read the press release.

After all, who would pay this much for a video game? Even a video game that has a lot of neat extras and is only available in very limited quantities.

Then again, there probably are 999 people out there with cash to burn who would do just this very thing. The world is a strange place, and some people have more money than they know what to do with.

Here's what the Dawn of the Creed Legendary Edition comes with:

Available for Shipping Now:

  • Highly detailed 28.7 inch (73cm) resin statue of Bayek, a protector of Egypt whose personal story will lead to the creation of the Assassin’s Brotherhood; and his eagle, Senu - By Ubicollectibles.
  • The Collector’s Certificate of Authenticity, numbered 1 to 999.
  • An exclusive replica of Bayek’s eagle skull amulet in resin.
  • Two exclusive Assassin’s Creed Origins Steelbooks™.
  • Four large lithographs signed by the Ubisoft Montreal studio artists.

Available on Day One:

  • The Assassin’s Creed Origins Gold Edition: The base game, the Digital Deluxe Pack and the Season Pass, which will give players access to all upcoming major expansions and equipment sets.
  • The game’s art book, featuring original designs and concept art created by the Ubisoft Montreal artists.
  • The game’s official soundtrack.
  • A printed version of the game’s hand-drawn world map.
  • Two original art cards.

It's a cool-looking statue for sure:

Still, no matter how cool the statue, no matter all the other perks, I simply cannot fathom paying $800 for a game. Madness!

But the real story is in the two other collector's editions that Ubisoft is offering for this game. The Assassin’s Creed Origins Dawn of the Creed Collector’s Edition costs $159.99 and includes:

  • Assassin’s Creed Origins Gold Edition**: The base game, the Digital Deluxe Pack and the Season Pass, which will give players access to all upcoming major expansions and equipment sets.
  • High-end Bayek and Senu figurine 15.4 inch (39cm) by Ubicollectibles.
  • An exclusive replica of Bayek’s eagle skull amulet.
  • The exclusive Assassin’s Creed Origins Steelbook™ for the Dawn of the Creed Collector’s Edition.
  • The game’s art book, featuring original designs and concept art created by the Ubisoft Montreal artists.
  • The game’s official soundtrack.
  • A printed version of the game’s hand-drawn world map.
  • Two original art cards.

Meanwhile, the Assassin’s Creed Origins Gods Collector’s Edition costs $119.99 and includes:

  • The Assassin’s Creed Origins base game, the Digital Deluxe Pack and the Secrets of the First Pyramids mission.
  • High-end Bayek figurine standing on the Sekhmet Goddess statue 10.2 inch (26cm) by Ubicollectibles.
  • The game’s art book, featuring original designs and concept art created by the Ubisoft Montreal artists.
  • The game’s official soundtrack.
  • A printed version of the game’s hand-drawn world map.

That means the cheapest collector's edition you can buy for this game is still $120. The cheapest sku is still not cheap, though it's a far cry from $799.99 at least.

I guess if you're a super-fan and you've got money burning a hole in your mattress, go for it. Just because I can't understand it doesn't make it bad. You be you.

Assassin's Creed Origins comes out on October 27th on PS4, PC and Xbox One. Read my hands-on impressions of the game here.
