Do you want to look like Naomi Campbell?

As a young girl growing up in the 90s, one woman stands out as the epitome of beauty and glamour for young black women – Naomi Campbell. Still rocking it to this day, she has survived the going of her original supermodel peers and the coming of younger, skinnier versions from all over the world.

This is Naomi Campbell as she is more often than not seen today, with her short bob hair style. But, those with good memories will remember that this is not how she has always worn her hair. NB: We are NOT our hair, so yes, we may choose to wear our hair any way we like. But, hopefully, you will see my point soon enough.

This is the young Naomi Campbell. Remember, she has been in this business for 25 years.

In these two pictures, you will note that she is wearing basically the same hairstyle, with a centre parting. Although, there is a slight difference in the amount of hair at the hair line.

In these pictures, you will notice that her hair line has receded considerably. Then, in 2010, a gust of wind revealed the unfortunate truth in the pictures below.

It is a known fact that after 25 years in the fashion business, Naomi Campbell remains one of the few black faces at the highest level. I can imagine how difficult it must have been in the early days to get hair stylists who knew how to effectively manage and care for African hair. The times have changed, in that we now have African professionals working in many different fields, including hair care. But it may already be too late for Naomi. At her age and on account of the strong glue and other such chemicals used on her head, her hair loss is most likely permanent.

Did You Know: Some hairstyles can be worn so tight that they cause a type of hair loss called “traction alopecia”? – hairloss.com

Looking at these pictures, can lead one to several conclusions. Based on what I see around me, it is my view that many Zambians will feel further justified in thinking that traction alopecia is normal and to be expected. After all, it has happened to Naomi Campbell, so who am I to expect no hair damage. I would hope to persuade you to think differently.

However, there is hope for many others, that this need not be their fate. We didn’t have these kind of hair problems in the past. However, the styles of the modern day are what is causing our hair to fall out when it should not. If your hair is falling out, or you are a woman and your hairline is receding, the explanation is rarely a purely medical condition, but more likely is as a result of the way you wear your hair.

Did you also know: The key to stopping traction alopecia is detecting it early. Hair styles that put unnecessary strain on the hair root must be changed for “looser, more gentle hair style – traction-alopecia.com

 How to Reverse Traction Alopecia?

1. Stop using harsh chemicals. Bleaching your hair and using dyes and/or hair-straightening chemicals can weaken the tensile strength of your hair and cause it to detach and fall out more easily. Once this happens, even normal brushing and combing can cause hair to fall out.

2. The longer you go without changing the habits that lead to traction alopecia, the more likely you are to wind up with permanent hair loss.
