Description

Since antiquity it has been used in perfume, incense and medicines. The resin obtained from the tree is called ‘storax’ or ‘benzoin’.

Flowers

Flowers are bell-shaped, white and fragrant, hanging from the tip of the branches. They are 5-7 petalled with numerous yellow anthersupper fertile part of the stamen containing the pollen. The calyx is 5-lobed.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf. Oval, alternate on the branches, 5-10 cm long, 3.5-5.5 cm wide.

Fruits Seeds

Drupe: outer fleshy parts surround a pit with a seed inside.

Medical

Gum resin: has been used to treat inflammation of the throat and chest congestion by thinning mucous and making it easier to cough up phlegm; also as a tincture to disinfect small injuries.
