Five things I know about style: Boy George

The musician on chunky shoes, owning more than 30 hats, and not having a figure for jeans

Seeing Ziggy Stardust at the Lewisham Odeon when I was 12 was a seminal moment. I borrowed my brother's embroidered bolero, cheesecloth shirt and split-knee pantaloons. The gig was filled with Bowie clones, and I looked a total sap.

As a child, my mum would always buy me brown and beige, and I always wanted yellow and orange. I plan on wearing a lot more colour this year. I am the happiest I've ever been – and I want to reflect that.

Always have comfortable shoes and a comfortable bed, because if you're not in one, you're in the other. It doesn't matter what style they are, but for me they need to be sturdy, as I'm quite tall. Good chunky shoes make me feel more confident.

If you want to get ahead, get a hat. Philip Treacy hats are the only indulgence I have these days. I have more than 30 at the moment, and I give a lot of them away to charity shops when I'm bored of them.

I love jeans, I but I don't have the figure for them. The last time I wore denim was when I was in prison when I had visitors – a striped shirt with short sleeves, tucked into jeans – it was horrific.

Boy George's new single, "Amazing Grace", is out on 22 March
