This is the most common Solid Granny Square crochet pattern. - Modified Solid Granny Square (Beige Square)
Slightly smaller than the basic solid square. - Small Circle Solid Granny Square (Yellow Square)
It starts with a circle in the center and develops into a square. - Big Circle Solid Granny Square (Green Square)
The circle is larger in the center and develops into a square. - No-Gap Solid Granny Square (White Square)
This granny square is completely solid and has no gaps at the corners.

Craft Supplies
The supplies to crochet a solid granny square are very basic, you just need some yarn, a proper-sized crochet hook to match the yarn weight, a tapestry needle to weave in the ends of the yarn, and scissors.
Depending on the project, these crochet squares are great for using your leftover yarn from the previous project. If you are using yarn scraps for the squares and want to join them together to make a larger piece, make sure you use a similar yarn weight so that the squares are a uniform size.

Tips On Choosing The Matching Squares To Join
If you want to crochet squares of different patterns, make sure you choose the right squares to crochet. Crochet square patterns come in different sizes, for example, a simple solid color Granny Square pattern with 5 rounds has 1 more stitch than the modified version. So when you join these 2 squares together, they will not match stitch for stitch.
For all crochet granny square patterns, always read the pattern and note the total stitch count for the last round of the crochet pattern. Divide the total stitch count by 4 to get the exact number of stitches for each side of the square. Crochet only the pattern with the same number of stitches, so you can easily join them together.
Crochet The Square Bigger – Problem and Solution
After a few rounds of crocheting the basic pattern for a solid granny square pattern, you will find that you can go round by round. The pattern is easy to replicate; therefore, you can go beyond the basic 5-round pattern by crocheting more rounds. However, you will have a problem if you crochet the pattern only from the right side.
Problem:
By its very nature, the crochet stitch will never sit directly on top of the previous round. It will either slant to the right or to the left, depending on whether you crochet right or left-handed. So if you increase a crochet square, it will become a crooked square.
Solution:
How can you fix the problem? The easiest way to fix this problem is to turn your crochet after each round. By crocheting with both right and wrong sides, you correct the problem of slanting stitches and, thus, the problem of crookedness.

We begin the pattern with a magic ring, but you may replace it with ch 3 and slst to the first st to form a ring.
Basic Solid Granny Square Pattern
This is the most common Solid Granny Square crochet pattern.
- Round 1: Loop yarn on your finger to make a magic ring, then crochet the following in the magic ring: ch3 (count as 1 dc st), 2dc, [ch2, 3dc] repeat 3 times. Pull the yarn end to close the magic ring. Join with hdc in the first st. {20}
- Round 2: ch3 (count as 1 dc st), dc in the hdc sp, dc in next 3 sts, [(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in ch2sp, dc in next 3 sts] repeat 3 times, 2dc in hdcsp. Join with hdc in the first st. {36}

Modified Solid Granny Square
This is the modified version of the basic Solid Granny Square crochet pattern. It has 1 st lesser at every side of the square (4 sts in a round) compared to the basic solid square, which makes it unique to have an even number of stitches on each side. This modified solid granny square is great to pair with other square designs with the same amount of stitches.
Round 1: Loop yarn on your finger to make a magic ring, then crochet the following in the magic ring: ch3 (count as 1 dc st), dc, [ch2, 2dc] repeat 3 times. Pull the yarn end to close the magic ring. Join with hdc in the first st. {16}
