Is Naomi Campbell’s Wig Hiding Hair Loss?

Naomi Campbell on Graham Norton Show

The question of whether Naomi Campbell is losing her hair is back in the media again after she appeared on the Graham Norton Show wearing a wig.

The supermodel first displayed signs of hair loss back in 2012, when she was photographed with a number of bald patches on her head, suggesting she was suffering from Traction Alopecia. Naomi was also photographed in Mayfair earlier this year as a gust of wind blew her hair back and exposed what appeared to be a hair weave.

What is Traction Alopecia?

The condition of Traction Alopecia is unusual amongst other causes of hair loss because it is entirely lifestyle-based. Continuous use of hair extensions, glues and tight hairstyles place tension on the hair shafts and over time, bald patches start to appear. The damage can be reversed if these hairstyles are abandoned early enough, but if the necessary changes are not made, the hair follicles can sustain permanent damage and the hair will not grow back.

Other female celebrities thought to have experienced Traction Alopecia include Nancy Dell’Ollio, Katie Price and Khloe Kardashian. Naomi’s Afro-Caribbean heritage, however, could make her condition more difficult to treat experts think this is because Afro-Caribbean hair is inherently weaker than other kinds of hair, and therefore breaks more easily.
