Star-nosed moles

Star-nosed moles possess perhaps the most extrodinary nose of any creature on the planet. Its nostrils are surrounded by 22 sensitive fingers that allow the mole to sense the world around it with touch alone, finding food at astonishing speed. Star-nosed moles are also efficient underwater hunters, and their nose is key to this success in an extraordinary way. The mole breathes out a small bubble of air, and breathes it back in, detecting in a millisecond if there is prey nearby. The fingers of the nose help hold the bubble in place. This technique allows the mole to sniff out prey underwater, but it also means it runs out of breath quite quickly. Fortunately, it can hunt underwater with the same speed as above ground.
