1. Impasto

Impasto is a technique that involves applying thick layers of paint to create texture and depth in your artwork. To achieve this result, you will need an impasto gel medium and a palette knife. Experiment with different colours and brush strokes to create a unique and dynamic piece.

How to do it:

1. On your paint palette, mix an equal amount of gel medium and your chosen acrylic paint colour together.

2. Once your paint is mixed well and fits a creamy consistency, use a palette knife to pick up the paint and apply it to your canvas in thick layers.

3. You can build paint on top of each other to achieve the ultimate three-dimensional effect.

2. Carving

Carving involves creating deep grooves and marks in your paint layers to reveal the layers beneath and creating a 3D texture painting on canvas. This technique requires carving tools and a lot of patience but the results can be stunning.

How to do it:

1. Begin by using one colour to paint the entirety of the canvas. Let the paint dry and then repeat this step 15 times.

2. Once the first colour is dried, repeat the first process with a second colour covering the entire canvas.

3. Once the second colour has dried, repeat the first process with the third colour. It is recommended to apply at least 40 layers of paint.

4. Get your relief printing supplies, aka your carving tools, and begin to carve out your design.

5. Explore deep and light carving to find the different colours that peak through your artwork.

3. Layering

Layering involves applying multiple layers of paint to create depth and dimension in your artwork. This gives the illusion that your artwork is a three-dimensional piece when it’s actually not! Experiment with different layering techniques to create a range of textures and effects.

How to do it:

1. Begin with your base layer of paint using a paint brush making sure to cover the entire canvas. Let the paint dry before the next step.

2. Paint your light subject with white acrylic paint as a silhouette, this will help your subject stand out and give it that 3D effect.

3. Once the white is dry, paint your subject with your chosen light colour.

4. Mix your acrylic paints to create darker and lighter shades of your chosen acrylics. Add some light-shaded paint and highlight the areas where the light will reflect your subject. Repeat this by applying darker-shaded paint to create shadows where the shade hits. This is what will create your three-dimensional effect.

5. Add details to your subject and there you have it, another great 3D acrylic painting technique!

4. Acrylic skins

Acrylic skin involves pouring a layer of liquid acrylic paint onto your canvas and allowing it to dry, then peeling it off to reveal 3D acrylic skins in your artwork! This technique can create a unique and unexpected pattern that adds depth and texture to any piece.

How to do it:

1. Mix your acrylic paint with an equal amount of pouring medium and blend well.

2. Use a smooth piece of plastic or glass to pour your acrylic on. Make sure to keep it thick enough so you can peel it all off in one go.

3. Leave the acrylic skins to dry overnight.

4. Once the acrylics have completely dried, you may begin peeling them off the plastic to reveal your acrylic skins!

5. Use craft glue to stick them onto art paper or a canvas! You may paint over them or leave them as they are.

5. Cornstarch

Another great technique that is used by many artists is applying cornstarch with acrylic paint for a thicker paint and to give the canvas a 3D effect. Cornstarch also creates a new consistency and texture that is loved by artists! And, if you don’t have any cornstarch laying around, you can always opt for some talcum powder or flour instead.

How to do it:

1. Add a small amount of cornstarch to your acrylic paint, and keep adding it in until you achieve your desired paint thickness.

2. Mix small amounts of paint at a time as the cornstarch will help the acrylic paint dry quicker than normal.

3. Using an acrylic paint brush, you can lay the paint on top of each other to achieve the desired three-dimensional effect.  The cornstarch also creates a unique texture and more of a matte finish.
