City of Culture of Galicia

At the top of Monte Gaiás, stands the
City of Culture of Galicia
one of the most emblematic structures of Santiago de Compostela, next to the Cathedral.

This architectural complex, designed by architect Peter Eisenman, was conceived with the aim of becoming a center of reference for the promotion and dissemination of Galician and global culture.

The “city”, partially inaugurated in 2011, is composed of a series of modern and avant-garde buildings that house various cultural institutions and spaces for events and activities. Among the most outstanding buildings are the Library and Archives of Galicia, the Fontán Building, the Cultural Innovation Center (CINC) and the Gaiás Center Museum. Each of these buildings has its own purpose and function within the complex.

The Hejduk Towers, designed by John Hejduk as botanical towers for the Belvís park, were never built. After the architect’s death, Eisenman wanted to build them as a tribute.

In addition to these buildings, the Cidade da Cultura has large green areas, squares and public spaces that invite leisure, contemplation and social interaction. Among these areas is the Theater Garden, a garden of 11,574 square meters with botanical species from all over the world, ponds, leisure areas and, as its name indicates, an open-air auditorium.

Eisenman’s architectural design is characterized by abstract geometric shapes and intersecting lines, creating a visually striking and unique environment. It is reminiscent of an archaeological site divided by natural cuts that evoke scallops.

Over the years, the Cidade da Cultura has hosted numerous cultural events, such as concerts, festivals, exhibitions and conferences, attracting artists and creators as well as visitors from all over the world. It is a place that seeks to promote culture in all its manifestations and to be a meeting point for creativity and diversity.

In fact, you don’t have to enter any museum to contemplate the art housed in this complex, as there are several emblematic exhibitions outside, such as ‘Espejos’, by Manolo Paz, ‘O prisma dos sentidos’, by Acisclo Manzano or ‘Zapatos en el camino’, by Francisco Leiro.

The Cidade da Cultura is a must-see destination for those who wish to immerse themselves in the cultural richness of Galicia. With its impressive architecture, cultural institutions and diverse programming, this spot has become a beacon that illuminates the cultural and artistic panorama of Santiago de Compostela.
