St. Isidore was a great figure of Orthodox monasticism and he was born near Mount Pelusium in Egypt, in 350 AD. His wealthy parents took care of his great education and sent him to Alexandria, where he studied Theology at the famous Catechism School. He studied in depth the Holy Scriptures and the works of St. John Chrysostom. He was ordained a deacon by Athanasios the Great and then returned to Pelusium, where he was distinguished for his enormous pastoral work. About 400 AD he retired to a monastery in the area and offered to his numerous visitors spiritual food and support, a fact that made him a great intellectual personality of that time. Isidore, through his famous epistles, scolded the iniquities of the clergy. He was particularly distinguished for his anti-heretic action and his writing work. He fervently served and loved God and surrendered his sanctified soul to Him in 437 AD. His feast day is on February 4.
