"Walter Gropius. Arizona, 1967. German architect and founder of the Bauhaus School. I said, 'Mr. Gropius, nice to meet you.' He said, 'Just Grope. Call me Grope, Bob. Grope.' The first swallow of his beer at dinner and the first puff of his post-dinner cigar went to his wife, Ise. They were at a dude ranch in Arizona. I always liked the LIFE caption: 'When Walter Gropius playfully squeezes spurts of water skyward, the droplets in their trajectory trace a beautiful design in the air.
