Crochet Star Stitch – Step By Step Photo & Video Tutorial
The star stitch is one of the prettiest patterns I’ve ever worked with. Although it looks complicated, it’s actually an easy stitch to crochet once you know where to insert your hook.
What is the star stitch? The star stitch (also known as the daisy stitch) is a crochet pattern constructed with single crochet and half double crochet stitches and a simple 2-row repeat that creates a star pattern sequence on the right side of your work.
Today I will show you how to crochet the star stitch with step-by-step photos and explanations and a video for those of you who find it easier to learn by watching how is it done.

Star Stitch Pattern Instructions
This pattern requires an uneven number of chains, my starting chain is 31.
The star stitch pattern is quite easy to crochet once you understand where to insert the hook to make your sc5tog.
Here is a short version of the pattern to see how easy it is to crochet, and after, you will find a detailed step-by-step explanation of how to make each star and where to insert your hook.
Simplified Star Stitch Pattern
Row 1: sc5tog from 2nd chain, ch1, *sc5tog from ch1, ch1*, repeat from * until you have 1ch left, 1hdc in that last ch, turn
Row 2: ch2 (counts as a hdc), *2hdc in each ch1 from the previous row*, repeat from * until you crocheted in each ch1 from the previous row, 1hdc in the last stitch, turn
Row 3: ch3 (does not count as a stitch), sc5tog from 2nd chain, ch1, *sc5tog from ch1, ch1*, repeat from * until you have 1st left, 1hdc in that last ch, turn
Row 4: ch2 (counts as a hdc), *2hdc in each ch1 from the previous row*, repeat from * until you crocheted in each ch1 from the previous row, 1hdc in the last stitch, turn
Repeat Rows 3 & 4 until you have the desired length.
Step by Step Star Stitch Pattern
Here is the same pattern but this time each row is broken down into steps so you can follow along and know exactly where to insert your hook to make the sc5tog stars.
Row 1: First row of stars
Step 1: Insert hook in the 2nd ch from hook, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on the hook)
Step 2: Repeat Step 1 four more times (you will have 6 loops on your hook), yo and pull through all the loops on the hook, this will create the spikes of the star.
Step 3: Ch1, this will create the star eye in which we will crochet the 2nd row. Now you have completed your first star in the row.
Step 4: Now we will create the second star by sc5tog, but the placement of the 5 loops is different. Insert hook in the star eye(the ch1 you made), yo, and pull up a loop (2 loops on the hook).
Step 5: Insert a hook in the space between the last 2 star spikes from the previous star you made, yo and pull up a loop(3 loops on the hook).
Step 6: Insert a hook in the same chain you made the last stitch of the previous star, yo and pull up a loop (4 loops on the hook).
Step 7: Insert the hook into the next chain, yo, and pull up a loop (5 loops on your hook). Repeat in the next chain and pull up a final loop (6 loops on your hook).
Step 8: Complete the star by yo and pull through all 6 loops on your hook, then ch1 to form the star eye.
Step 9: Repeat steps 4 – 8 to make more stars. Continue making stars across the row until you have 1 chain left.
Step 10: hdc in the last chain to complete row 1, turn.
Row 2: Creating the top part of each star
Step 1: Ch 2 (counts as a hdc)
Step 2: 2hdc in the star eye (the ch1 you created in the previous row)
Step 3: Continue to make 2hdc in each star eye until the end of the row
Step 4: Make 1hdc in the last stitch, turn
Row 3: Another row of stars
Step 1: Ch3 (does not count as a stitch. Insert hook in the 2nd ch from hook, yo, and pull up a loop (2 loops on the hook)
Step 2: Repeat Step 1 four more times (you will have 6 loops on your hook), yo and pull through all the loops on the hook, this will create the spikes of the star.
Step 3: Ch1 to create the eye of the star. Now you have completed your first star in the row.
Step 4: Now we will create the second star by sc5tog, but the placement of the 5 loops is different. Insert hook in the star eye(the ch1 you made), yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on the hook).
Step 5: Insert a hook in the space between the last 2 star spikes from the previous star you made, yo and pull up a loop(3 loops on the hook).

Step 8: Complete the star by yo and pull through all 6 loops on your hook, then ch1 to form the star eye.
Step 9: Repeat steps 4 – 8 to make more stars. Continue making stars across the row until you have 1 chain left.
Step 10: hdc in the last chain to complete row 1, turn.
Row 4: Another row of hdc to finish off the stars
Step 1: Ch 2 (counts as a hdc), 2hdc in each star eye across (the ch1 you created in the previous row)
Step 4: Make 1hdc in the last stitch, turn
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have the desired length.

How would you do increases and decreases in this pattern?

That’s a bit more complicated, as each star is created from multiple stitches. You will need to do the math and increase or decrease by the number of the pattern multiplier. Hope this helps 😊
