Tallahassee Community College offers veterans entrepreneurial training

Tallahassee Community College’s (second offering of the Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program is in full effect.

The nine-week entrepreneurial program, held at the TCC Center for Innovation, is designed for active duty service members and veterans who have an interest in starting or growing their own business.

The program uses the nationally recognized Lean Startup Method for entrepreneurship.

Tallahassee Community College to host high-school students

Tallahassee Community College will host nearly 400 area high school students from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday for TCC Preview.

The annual event is designed to help students make the transition to TCC.

Students from public, charter and private schools in Gadsden, Leon and Wakulla counties will participate.

TCC Foundation gets support from Florida College System, businesses

More than $66,000 in gifts were announced to Tallahassee Community College at the Feb. 18 District Board of Trustees meeting.

Heather Mitchell, executive director of the TCC Foundation, highlighted the following contributions:

Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare donated $10,000 to the 4th annual Cleaver and Cork dinner event. It’s TCC Foundation’s signature culinary event that raises money for scholarships, education program and facility upgrades.

The Moore Agency, a sponsor of Cleaver and Cork, donated $25,000 to the event.

Florida College System chancellor Kathy Hebda presented $31,334 to TCC from the Florida College System Foundation.

The FCS Foundation donation includes contributions from Florida Blue which donated $12,203 toward Nursing and Allied Health scholarships, Helios Education Foundation contributed $13,650 and Bank of America $5,481 for First Generation scholarships.

TCC students attend Florida Collegiate Honors Council conference

Tallahassee Community College Honors Program attended the 29th Annual Florida Collegiate Honors Council conference this month in  Altamonte Springs.

TCC had 19 students who participated in the conference.

This year’s conference theme was “Perceptions, Paradoxes, and Possibilities,” which encouraged students to consider how shifts in perceptions and values affect society. 

TCC takes honors at American Advertising Federation of Tallahassee Awards

The Tallahassee Community College Office of Communications and Marketing won a Gold ADDY award in the Magazine Design category and Best of Show for Print Arts Campaign at the 2019 American Advertising Federation of Tallahassee Awards gala.

TCC Wakulla Center to host Leadership Series

The Tallahassee Community College Wakulla Center is hosting three eight-week Leadership Series from March-October.

The sessions will be taught by Brian English, founder of the English Financial Group and member of the Wakulla County Chamber of Commerce.

The series is based upon the teachings of John C. Maxwell, internationally respected leadership expert, coach, speaker and author.

The first series, running March to April is : “Invaluable Laws of Growth: Live Them and Reach your Potential”

The cost is $200 per session or $500 for the entire series. The price includes lunch each week and a personal copy of the book for each session. Space is limited to 15 people per session.

Noted economist to address inclusive growth at Florida State University 

The Florida State University College of Social Sciences and Public Policy is hosting a lecture and discussion by noted economist Prakash Loungani of the International Monetary Fund.

Loungani will speak on the subject of his latest book, “Confronting Inequality: How Societies Can Choose Inclusive Growth.”

The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. Thursday at Broad Auditorium inside the Pepper Center, 636 W. Call St.

FAMU College of Law students awarded achievement scholarships

Two Florida A&M University College of Law students were awarded the Holland Bar Preparation Scholarship and the late Judge Edward Rogers Legends Scholarship.

The F. Malcolm Cunningham, Sr. Bar Association awards scholarships to third-year African-American law students, scheduled to take the bar exam in July 2019. The scholarships offset the bar examination preparation expenses for students who demonstrate a commitment to excellence.

The two recipients, Ashley Wilson and Ariel Cavazos, received their awards this month at the 18th Annual William M. Holland Scholarship Luncheon in West Palm Beach.

Wilson received the Holland Bar Prep Scholarship of $1,500. Ariel Cavazos received the Judge Edward Rodgers Legends Scholarship of $2,500.

FAMU’s Literary Series features collaboration with Amanda Stenberg

 Florida A&M University’s 2019 Spring Literary Forum Series will be held Feb. 28 – March 1. This year’s theme is Black to the Future II: “The Black Heroic Meme”.

The series is dedicated to the celebration of black heroes: past, present, and future.

 The keynote speaker Sebastian A. Jones is the founder of Stranger Comics and co-author of Niobe: She Is Life with award-winning actress Amanda Stenberg.
