IRELAND: pike report from Melview Lodge

Allan Renaudin from France was over for annual fishing holiday to Melview Lodge in Longford, and what a start to his holiday he had taking 36 Pike to 14 lbs in the first three days on Lures. Kevin said, after this the weather changed and we had to do some fishing from the bank. This reduced the numbers of fish being caught but produced some cracking fish between 16lb and 24lb to static dead baits, then it was back to the boat. I decided that due to the cold spell we would put the Lures away and change to dead baits, this produced fish to 27lb 2oz and was solid action for four days with the fish taking Herring, mackerel, Pollen and Roach dead baits. Next week I report on Allan’s last weeks fishing, log on next week to see how he got on.

All fish returned un-harmed to the water.

ECUADOR: big marlin hooked in Galapagos Islands

A marlin report from Ecuagringo operating in Galapagos Islands:

Feb 21,2013 was the last day for Mike Eakins and Tom Noohnan to fish aboard the Vertigo on this trip. We headed for 0-30 bank looking to repeat the success of the blue marlin activity the previous day. The skies and water were blue.
Seas calm and water 75 F. Dolphins and a few tuna were seen on the bank and we decided to fish lures and ready a 10 lb tuna as a pitch bait. We caught a few big eyes even though we tried to avoid them but they seem to be everywhere constantly making it hard to troll ballyhoo.

The morning went uneventful but our first marlin bite came around 13:40 and Mike Eakins took the rod to fight a beautiful black marlin which was released less than 20 minutes later and estimated around 350#. Next fish bit at 15:32 and was a nice blue around 500 that was brought to the double in about.

CANADA: ice fishing record lake trout

Angler Bruce Sederberg the past  January  hooked t the world’s largest lake trout ever landed with a pole and line and released through the ice.

Sederberg was ice fishing over White Otter Lake, in Ontario, Canada when the 46-inch giant  engulfed his jig in 58 feet of water.

Sederberg was using a 1/2 oz. Super-Glo Perch Buck-Shot Rattle Spoon tipped with a real minnow head. Linking his jig to his 25 JigWhopper rod and 4000 Shimano Symetre spinning reel was 20 lb PowerPro superline for main line and a short leader of 10 lb fluorocarbon.

While fighting the fish, it regurgitated what looked to be a 3 lb big whitefish. “Why it ate my tiny lure I’ll never know,” he says.

Sederberg fought the fish for forty-five minutes, with his nephew, Bryan Sederberg, standing by part of the time. “The fish would take out a massive amount of line at a slow, steady pace, then when it would stop and I was able to regain what it stripped,” he says.

Sederberg’s trout estimated to be 40 to 44 pounds.

IRELAND: 21 lb ferox trout caught on Corrib lake

Angler Tomi Kurman and his friend Jacek Gorny, memmbers of the "Corrib Predatore Team" have been guiding anglers on Corrib for a few years now, specialising in brown trout, ferox trout and pike fishing, and their guests have taken many specimen fish in that time.

Gorny  himself, however, had an opening day to remember last week, when he caught his own personal best trout from Corrib, a magnificent ferox of 36 inch -  93 centimetre m, that weighed 10 kilo - 21 pound.
Fish took trolled lure from Hybrida Wobbler B3 model.

Fortunately the big trout  was photographed before being carefully released again.

Jacek Gorny  says "Fish took a bait on relatively shallow water- 15 feet. It's only start of the season but Trout's are getting very active. Together with my business partner- Tomi Kurman we caught numbers of good trout already (over 70 cm). If it will stay like that there is a chance to beat up our own record from last season with 78 trout over 70 cm!"

ECUADOR: Galapagos Islands marlin fishing report

Here the last report from Ecuagringo, a fishing operation based on Galapagos island of San Cristobal:

"We continued fishing Feb 17 and 18, 2013 with Tom Noohnan and Mike Eakins. The seas have been calm and the days sunny and beautiful. You could not ask for nicer conditions.
On Feb 17, 2013 onboard the Vertigo we headed to 0-30 Bank, 25 miles from port. The bank was loaded with tuna and hundreds of birds. Flying fish trying to escape the tuna would find death from above. The scene of tunas crashing into birds was repeated over and over again. After two frustrating hours of fishing with baits we had to pull all teaser only as we caught dozens of tunas and they would not leave us alone to chase marlin. We could have caught dozens more of tunas averaging 20 to 60#. No marlin were produced on 0-30 but we did eventually raise a stripey that did not tease in well near Santa Fe island.

February 18: we headed out to 88 Bank to find it charged full of small tuna. Hundreds of tunas would crash through our spread every few minutes making it impossible to fish for marlin with baits so again we tried teasers. With no luck on striped marlin we fished towards San Cristobal. Tom Noohnan made swift work of a late day blue marlin of 250# to release in under 18 minutes of fight."

CANADA: minus 40 degrees but hot action

Hot action in Canada with temperature of minus 40 degrees. Fishing guide Ben Beattie share his last fishing catches: northern pike, lake trout and walleye.

"We've been getting our share of nice walleye. Lindy jigging spoons like the Frostee and Rattlin' Flyer Spoon have been producing, and so has a jig and minnow."

"Using a tip-up with deadbait on a quick strike has proven to be a big fish magnet. Along with the previous lake trout, this monster pike was caught on a quick strike rig by my good buddy Mike"

AUSTRALIA: hot action off Port Stephens

Lot of great marlin action in Port Stephens for black and striped marlin. After the big reels are put up off the Great Barrier Reef, those who are lucky enough to keep fishing, start moving farther down south to chase the marlin.

They can be caught in great numbers, with many of those being caught close to shore. We have been getting constant reports of boats getting five o more shots a day between Blacks and Stripes.

Most recently we have been getting not only great reports, but excellent shots from angler Househam Jay  fishing on the "Freedom". Over the last five days, they have released 26 Marlin, with the most recent day going four on five, which consisted of three Black Marlin (up to  300 pound) and a Striped Marlin.

To add to the fun, the angler on board "Freedom" are using 30 pound test as well, so these fish are a lot of fun on light tackle. The season is just kicking into high hear, so expect to see more great numbers.

IRELAND: pike fishing report from Melview Lodge

Here a pike fishing report from Melview Lodge in Longofrod, Ireland:
"Dan and friend Sidney from Cork were up for a days fishing with Kevin Lyons of Melview Lodge in Longford, after a number of cancelations over the past month due to bad weather conditions the lads decided they would come up for the day even though water levels were very high and everywhere was in flood.
Kevin said, I decided that due to the weather it was not advisable to fish using a boat so showed them a spot on the banks of the River Shannon. Sidney had set up and cast his first rod out using popped up dead bait and as he was setting rod number two up off went his first rod on a screaming run only for the fish to drop it as Sidney picked up the rod to strike, after this things were quite for a long while until friend Dan banked a cracking Pike to finish a long hard day."

USA: larger tiger shark ever landed in Texas

Probably the tiger shark caught by top angler Alberto Zertuche of Zs easy fishin.com (www.Zseasyfishin.com) is one of the biggest landed from a pier.
This monster shark was landed at Bob Hall Pier, Located on Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Texas; it was 12.3 feet long with an approximate weight of 600 pound.

Alberto fought it for 35 min, and took 10 mins to walk down the 1200' pier to the beach so they could get a DNA sample, tag and release the shark which was one of 18 tiger sharks.

Alberto had used  half of a 30# cownose stingray, which a kayak was used to deploy the bait from the end of the pier another 800 yards out.  Then 18 hrs later the shark picked up the bait and the fight was on. He was using an Avet 80/02 spooled with 100# Jerry Brown hollow core braid, and his own line of shark rod, leaders and weights I specifically designed to catch sharks.

During the season they have caught that season of 160 sharks we tagged as well.  Bull sharks, greater hammerhead sharks, scallop hammer heads, blacktips both species, lemon sharks, silky, finetooth, blacknose Atlantic sharpnose, sand bar sharks.

MEXICO: huge 987 lbs monster marlin

A fantastic epic battle was taking place off the Cabo San Lucas coasts in Mexico yesterday with a monster marlin.

The charter boat "Ziggy", a 32 feet, left the dock Saturday morning on what was supposed to be a half day, or four hour trip. The anglers all senior citizens from Phoenix, Arizona, were no spring chickens and if Captain Manuel Dominguez, understood them correctly, the youngest was 82 years old. They headed up the Pacific to look for tuna as the clients had requested.

It was 1.20 pm in the afternoon and they were nine miles off of Cabo; time to bring the lines in. Suddenly they got a hit on their right outrigger, their homemade flying fish lure - the line started to peel off the reel at an alarming speed. Cpt. Manuel tough was an huge yellowfin tuna, but around 40 minutes later the fish jumped and they saw that it was a large blue marlin "I thought it was around 800 pound, because I´ve caught two around that size before", said the captain.

They fought the fish for several hours and at  9.00 pm he felt the fish shaking it's head and knew it was jumping - he got the fish boat side, handed the rod to his deckhand and went back to the controls, while his crew gaffed the fish.

They now had a new problem on their hands; how to get the marlin on to the swim step or in the boat. They struggled for half an hour before giving up and tying the head only to the swim step and starting the sixteen mile trip home in the dark. Good to their word the Pisces boys were there to lend a hand when they finally pulled into their slip during the night at 1.30  on Sunday.

There was no way to weigh the fish at that hour, so between them all they hauled the massive fish up onto the concrete dock and left it in the custody of the night watchman, before waving goodbye to the dazed anglers who headed off to their hotel. What a surprise everybody got on Sunday morning to see that huge fish lying there.

In the morning at  8.30 am there was enough help to get the fish weighed and it was hauled up on the marina scale where it registered 987 lbs. Now, it had sat out all night on the dock so at least ten percent of its body weight had been lost, meaning it was at least 1085 lbs putting it in the top 5 largest fish ever caught in Cabo.

NEW ZEALAND: giant squid of 25 feet

A giant squid measuring 25 feet was found off Kaikoura in New Zealand. this mhuge marine creature was discovered on the surface by Jack and Sharon Osikai.

They need more than one hour to pull it in.

Part of the mantle, or head, was missing and some wondered whether the giant squid had perished during a recent battle with another squid, or some other creature.

AUSTRALIA: black marlin fishing from the rocks

A great catch from Austrialia coast. Well-known Australian angler Adam Dia realised a long-held dream on January 24 when he hooked, fought and landed a massive 333 pound 151 kilo black marlin off the world famous Tubes in Jervis Bay, on the New South Wales South Coast in Australia.

The big marlin  took a live fish under a balloon. Adam used 50 pound Momoi line fished on a Shimano Tiagra 50W and a custom 800 XH Calstar rod built. The hook was a 7/0 Mustad Seamaster. The fight was a surprisingly short, only 28 minutes.

About the same time this fish was caught, we heard of another anfler getting spooled at the Tubes by a big billfish.
